Psychotropic Medication
Definition: Any medication prescribed to affect mood, behavior, or cognitive function, including antipsychotics, anxiolytics, antidepressants, and hypnotics. Subject to heightened regulatory scrutiny in nursing homes.
In Practice
CMS closely monitors psychotropic medication use, particularly antipsychotics. Facilities must document a valid indication, attempt gradual dose reductions (GDR) unless clinically contraindicated, and monitor for side effects. Psychotropic medications must not be used for staff convenience or as discipline. Unnecessary psychotropic use is a per-instance CMP offense.
