Restraint
Definition: Any manual method, physical or mechanical device, material, or equipment attached to or near a resident's body that restricts freedom of movement or normal access to one's body. Includes both physical restraints (side rails, vest restraints) and chemical restraints (psychotropic medications used for discipline or convenience).
In Practice
CMS has a strong policy against unnecessary restraint use. Facilities must demonstrate that restraints are used only when medically necessary, with informed consent, and as a last resort. Unnecessary restraint use, particularly chemical restraints via antipsychotic medications, is a high-priority survey area.
