Civil Money Penalty (CMP)
Definition: A monetary fine imposed on a nursing home for noncompliance with federal participation requirements. CMPs can be assessed per day of noncompliance or per instance of noncompliance.

CMP amounts range from $50 to 0,000 per day or ,000 to $25,000 per instance, depending on the severity. CMS may impose CMPs for any deficiency at scope/severity level D or above. Facilities can appeal CMP decisions through the Departmental Appeals Board. A portion of collected CMPs funds quality improvement initiatives.
