Advance Directive

Definition: A legal document in which a person specifies their preferences for future healthcare decisions if they become unable to make those decisions, including living wills and durable powers of attorney for healthcare.

In Practice

Nursing homes must inform residents of their right to formulate advance directives, document whether advance directives exist, and ensure care is provided in accordance with the resident's wishes. Failure to honor advance directives is a significant compliance issue.
