Payroll-Based Journal (PBJ)

Definition: A CMS system that requires nursing homes to electronically submit staffing data based on actual payroll records, providing accurate information about the number and type of staff working in each facility.

In Practice

PBJ data replaced the previously self-reported staffing data on Nursing Home Compare. Facilities must submit data quarterly. The staffing levels reported through PBJ directly affect the Five-Star staffing rating and are used to verify compliance with minimum staffing requirements.
