Life Safety Code (LSC)

Definition: The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 101 Life Safety Code, which establishes fire safety and building code standards for nursing homes. Compliance is surveyed separately from health inspection requirements.

In Practice

LSC surveys evaluate fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, smoke compartments, means of egress, emergency preparedness plans, and building maintenance. LSC deficiencies receive K-Tags rather than F-Tags. Facilities must maintain compliance with both the current edition adopted by CMS and any state-specific fire safety requirements.
