Isolation Precautions

Definition: Infection control measures implemented to prevent the transmission of infectious agents from an infected or colonized resident to other residents, staff, and visitors. Includes standard precautions and transmission-based precautions (contact, droplet, airborne).

In Practice

Proper implementation of isolation precautions is a key component of the infection prevention program (F0880). Surveyors observe whether appropriate signage is posted, PPE is available and used correctly, and isolation protocols are followed consistently. Failures in isolation precautions are frequently cited during infection control surveys.
