Critical Element Pathway (CEP)
Definition: A structured investigation tool used by CMS surveyors to evaluate compliance with specific regulatory requirements. Each CEP guides the surveyor through a systematic review of care processes for individual residents.
In Practice
CEPs are central to the survey process. Surveyors use them to investigate areas such as falls, pressure injuries, medication management, nutrition, and behavioral health. Understanding which CEPs surveyors are likely to use helps facilities prepare effectively. There are approximately 20 CEPs covering different care areas.
